Vitomax HW-EH / LW-EH: hybrid boilers for industrial hot water production

With Viessmann Vitomax high-pressure (HW-EH) and low-pressure (LW-EH) hot water boilers, you can contribute to the energy transition. This is because, in addition to fossil fuels, these hybrid boilers partially use electricity to generate heat. This “electricity to heat” principle allows for the economical use of resources while reducing flue gas emissions during hot water production. Furthermore, the seamless, interconnected components of Viessmann’s system solutions ensure reliable operation.

What is the difference between high and low pressure hot water boilers?

A key feature of the Viessmann Vitomax HW-EH/LW-EH hot water boilers is the hybrid operation of their forced-air burners and electric heating cartridges. This allows them to achieve higher efficiency than comparable models that use fossil fuels exclusively. This has both environmental and economic benefits. Lower consumption conserves limited resources and reduces CO2 and nitrogen oxide emissions. While the latter has a positive impact on the company’s carbon footprint and emissions tax, lower fossil fuel consumption significantly reduces operating costs. This also applies to the use of low-cost electricity, which can be drawn from the grid during production peaks or generated internally using appropriate technology. Electric operation promotes high supply reliability: if fossil fuels fail, this can be compensated proportionally. This reduces interruptions in production processes.

Use of alternative fuels

Further fossil fuel savings are possible through the use of biogenic fuels and hydrogen. This is because the Vitomax HW-EH/LW-EH hybrid boilers are 100% hydrogen-ready and can operate on both liquid and gaseous biogenic energy sources.

Optimized operation of Vitomax HW-EH / LW-EH hybrid boilers

Electricity is used to optimize the startup process. This prevents flue gas temperatures from dropping below the dew point. Once operating, the boiler switches to the primary fuel or starts. This also allows the use of energy sources with low flue gas dew points or whose condensate components would otherwise be harmful. The increased normal range and peak load compensation also allow for better control during partial load reductions. The electric heat retention of the Vitomax HW-EH/LW-EH hybrid boilers offers operational advantages. In addition to quickly delivering thermal energy, heat retention prevents unnecessary burner cycles. This prevents wear, extends component life, and reduces costs.

Technical specifications

  • Capacity: 1.2 – 8.4 t/h / ~ 0.8 – 5.6 MW
  • Fuel to electricity combustion ratio: ~ 4:1
  • Higher performance and pressure on demand

Heating cartridges allow for efficient use of electricity

Viessmann Vitomax HW-EH/LW-EH hybrid boilers feature up to two heating cartridges that convert electrical energy into heat. This heat, in turn, is used to produce hot water. The cartridge heaters are flange heaters and are connected to the boiler via a connector. Depending on requirements, the immersion depth can be up to 4.5 meters. Wall thicknesses of up to 2.1 millimeters ensure high resistance to corrosion and mechanical stress.
