Vitoset Ice Energy Storage System

Innovative energy source for brine/water heat pumps

The use of ice storage as an energy source is particularly innovative. The ice storage consists of a tank with built-in heat exchangers, which is buried in the garden and filled with ordinary tap water.

Ice Energy Storage System

In the garden, an energy fence consisting of aluminum solar air absorbers is installed on the surface, which collects heat from the surrounding air as well as from solar radiation and feeds it to a heat pump or storage. Ice energy storage also receives heat directly from the ground.

Product usage
Vitoset uses four times the energy of the environment thanks to the ice energy storage system and energy fences

Using crystallization energy for heating

If the solar air sinks do not provide enough energy, the heat pump extracts the energy needed for central heating and DHW heating from the water stored in the tank. If the temperature in the tank drops to freezing, more energy is obtained from the freezing of the water – hence the term “ice energy storage”. In the transition from water to ice, the amount of crystallization energy released is equivalent to the energy required for the reverse thawing process. When storing ice with a volume of ten cubic meters – the standard size for a single house – this corresponds to the energy contained in more than 120 liters of fuel oil. The key difference is that the fuel oil is completely used to generate heat, while the water contained in energy ice can be used over and over again to generate heat using solar and air energy.

Packaged solutions for easy installation

As a manufacturer of heat pumps, Viessmann offers the extremely innovative Vitoset ice energy storage system. For heat pumps with a rated heat output of 6.0 to 17.2 kW, various standard system packages are currently offered, which greatly facilitate the planning and ordering of components. Packages include ice energy storage with integrated heat exchangers and pre-installed hydraulics (see illustration) for easy on-site installation. Solar air absorbers are also included, including a foundation to be installed one after the other or side by side. In addition, the delivery set includes the required amount of heat transfer fluid for the primary circuit. Larger facilities with higher heat requirements require individual sizing of the ice storage and solar absorbers. Viessmann offers appropriate support for this.

Individually pre-assembled hydraulic module with integrated control system

The components of the system are matched to each other

The system packages are designed so that the available heat sources – outdoor air, solar energy and geothermal heat – are used as efficiently as possible. For this purpose, all components are precisely matched to each other. This ensures that the heat pump is always running efficiently, no matter what heat source – a solar air absorber or ice storage – is available.

Product usage
Solar air sink (energy intake) as a direct heat source for a heat pump or for ice energy storage regeneration
